The Deadn't

three living people who killed the Undertaker and have nowhere to go

"The Undertaker dug graves and made coffins. She buried corpses and left them to rot. Some refused to do so quietly. Some, she silenced herself. Some died. Some didn't."

The Deadn't are living, breathing people — like the PCs — who, by chance or fate, found themselves alive in Graven-Tosk. They made it to The Undertaker's Hut, confronted the Undertaker in order to escape, were refused, and killed her. Then they discovered they could not leave either.

They've decided to stick around. When the PCs arrive, the Deadn't are inside the hut, assigning chores and arguing about first watch. "They're friendly enough and invite the PCs to join them in settling down."

The trio's small camp is the closest thing to community Graven-Tosk offers. It is also the trigger for everything bad that follows — at some point during the encounter, the air grows suddenly chill, the flies' buzzing fades, and the Undertaker's body rises from her uncovered grave as The Übertaker. They did not undo her. They woke her into something worse.

The Three

Stein, a Grift merchant

"HP 2, Morale 8, No armor, Shortsword d4. Carries a purse containing 50 silver." A trader from Grift — one of the bridge-city's many travelling merchants. His morale is steady but his hands are not. The shortsword is rusted; the purse is the most silver anyone in the hut owns. See Stein.

Benzen, a Schleswig guard

"HP 3, Morale 9, Leather -d2, Crossbow d8. Carries 10 bolts." A man-at-arms from Schleswig — formerly part of Fathmu IX's scattering apparatus of city guards. The crossbow is the most dangerous weapon in the hut. He believes in chores and first-watch the way a man believes in something that used to keep him alive. See Benzen.

Arga, a Galgenbeck priest

"HP 4, Morale 10, Scale -d4, Staff d4. Carries a random sacred scroll." A priestess of the Two-Headed Basilisks from Galgenbeck's Cathedral. Of the three, she is hardiest and steadiest — Morale 10 in a place that breaks Morale. She carries a random sacred scroll. She buried the Undertaker. She did not bury her well enough. See Arga.

The Encounter

When the PCs arrive, the Deadn't offer welcome. Settling down with them is possible — the booklet does not forbid it — but everyone living in the cemetery stays in the cemetery, and the cemetery is consuming itself. Whether the PCs ally with them, kill them for their gear, or arrive in time to fight the Übertaker alongside them is a GM call.

Gaps / Expansion Notes

How the three of them found each other before reaching the hut is unstated. Whether they know about the Roach Herder (and he about them) is left open. The Undertaker's actual name is never given — only her title. Whether she had been waiting for them, or whether they were simply the latest to arrive, is canon-quiet. Their long-term plan, beyond chores and first watch, is no plan at all. They will not last the Calendar.
