Eat Prey Kill — Bestiary and Hunting Rules

When stomachs growl and there's no inn in sight, roll for Presence and succeed to see what potential feasts you find. Roll d6 on the region table. Failing means you can still find things to kill — but probably a mishap.

How much meat? Day rations equal to creature's HP (or GM-reasonable). How many? If a die in parentheses, roll it. Otherwise, one.

d10 Hunting Mishaps

The beast is infested with exploding ticks / another hunting party nearby / another predator lurking / scavengers have followed / the beast is undead, controlled by a mad necromancer / beast's lair is nearby / beast is sick (contagious, inedible) / beast belongs to an earthbound mud shaman / beast is painted holy by locals / hunt drags both parties into poisonous thorns, unstable ice, or a collapsing ravine.

d10 In the Belly of the Beast

Priest remains (maybe a scroll) / long angry flesh worm / one of its spawn, still alive / a sharp bone usable as a piercing weapon (2d4) / a lich's skull (ruby eyes, 25s each) / d6 silver / remains of a child a nearby village seeks alive / broken glass that may contaminate the meat / a black tube of hallucinogenic powder (Presence DR12, can see and speak with spirits) / a human femur covered in arcane runes — opens any magically sealed door, then turns to salt, cursing its owner.

Regional Tables (d6 each)

  • Tveland: Antideer / Flayed Vultures / Ratbit / Feral Horses / Steppe Wolfe / Tusked Bison
  • Sarkash: Skelelk / Dredgehog / Carrion Owls / Throat-cutting Warbler / Mulch-Squirrels / Howler Bear
  • Graven-Tosk: Giant Skull Moth / Twice-grown Corpse Flies / Unbred Mutts / Grim-toothed Squirrel / Meatroach / Half-billed Raven
  • Grift: Uncommon Rats / Cellar Crabs / Nameless & Tameless Strays / Straw-lion / Lentil Lice / (plus one more)
  • Other regions include the lands of Kergüs, Bergen Chrypt, Western Kingdom, Endless Sea, Valley of the Unfortunate Undead with their own d6 tables.

Each beast is a stat block and a single line of flavor — the Howler Bear lures prey by wailing like dying men ("HELP" and "I'M BEING EATEN BY A HOWLER BEAR"); the Antideer tastes like venison but isn't and requires DR12 Presence afterwards to live with yourself; the Grim-toothed Squirrel has teeth for cracking bones; the Meatroach has a poisonous murder-appendix that must be removed before cooking.

Gaps / Expansion Notes

Eat Prey Kill creates dozens of named regional creatures. Only highlights are extracted here; each beast deserves an individual entry in /wiki/creatures/ as expansion work. The "mud shaman" of the Earthbound is named only as Mishap 8.
